3 Steps to identify your target audience

A target market is a group of people that share the same needs, wants, and desires. It is a customer segment that you can identify and focus your marketing efforts on. The most important question to ask when targeting your target market is “who are they?”

To find out who your target market is, there are three steps:

  1. Identify the needs of the audience.
  2. Identify the wants of the audience.
  3. Identify what drives them to take action.

An advertising campaign will help to gain the attention of your target market, too. To ensure its success you should try the following steps:

Step 1: Identify the Needs of the Audience

The easiest way to identify the needs of your audience is to ask them. You can do this by using a survey, or asking them in person, over email, or with a phone call. Surveys are often used because they are excellent tools for gathering information.

Conducting focus groups is also a popular way to gather the opinions of your target audience. This is when you bring together a group of people who fall into your target market and ask them questions. The purpose of this is to learn what they want, how they want it, and when they want it. The problem with focusgroups is that you can’t bring more than five people together at once. This limits the amount of information you can collect from each focus group.

You can also get information by conducting telephone or online surveys.

Brainstorm some questions that will help you determine what your target market is looking for. Try to think of questions that will let you understand what your target market is thinking, how they feel about certain situations, and how they make decisions.

Step 2: Identify the Wants of the Audience

Once you have identified their needs, identify their wants. Everyone has some wants; even people that seem to have everything will have a range of needs and desires to be met. It can range from a new car or home to a new luxury watch or vacation. Do you know what your target market wants? Knowing what it wants will ensure you can implement measures which will help attract your target market.

Step 3: Identify What Drives the Audience To Take Action

How will they take action on what they want? Are they going to buy something or just look at it? Do they need a mortgage loan or a car loan? These are some examples of what drives people to take action. You also need to think about things that cause them to take action, such as how many times they shop online, and how often they visit your website. Simply knowing what your target market wants is not enough. Your advertising campaign must also be reachable by your target audience and meet their wants and needs. Take note of your competitors and see if you can get an edge on them by being different in any way. Whatever you do, don’t just continue to do the same thing that you have always done; your target audience will soon grow weary of the same advertising message coming across their desk.
